PadMed has reached the top 10 downloads in 15 Spanish-speaking countries in its first month in Apple Store
Researchers at the Maimonides Institute for Biomedical Research (IMIBIC) linked to Reina Sofia University Hospital of Cordoba have created, along with members of the Polytechnic University of Cordoba, an application for mobile devices in order to provide support to medical professionals to make quick and easy decisions during the development of their daily work.
This pocket software has successfully passed a pilot study at Reina Sofía University Hospital. During the validation period, which lasted two months, healthcare professionals have highlighted its functionality and clarity when offering answers.
Among its hallmarks are access to updated medical information for over 80 prevalent pathologies, protocols and algorithms of action, a medical calculator and information on drugs in emergency situations. It also includes a laboratory module that provides information on common biochemistry measurement range values and a notepad application to file work information.
'The goal of PadMed is to become a useful tool for all physicians. In addition to strengthening clinical decisions, it can help to avoid basic interconsultations on other specialties and save time in the final diagnosis. In addition, other groups such as medical students and nurses may find it useful to answer questions at any time', says Javier Delgado Lista, Internal Medicine specialist at Reina Sofia University Hospital and one of the creators of PadMed.
The application is now available for iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android operating systems with a free trial period. In its first month on the AppStore, PadMed has reached the Top 10 downloads in 15 Spanish-speaking countries. With the emergence of the Android version, the creators hope to reach the vast majority of Spanish-speaking doctors.
More agility in less time
The idea for this app came from a doctor-patient relationship of Javier Delgado, specialist facultative in Internal Medicine at Reina Sofía University Hospital Universitario with Herruzo Ezequiel Gomez, deputy director of the Polytechnic School of the University of Córdoba. Both professionals noted that the daily clinical practice raises questions that could be resolved with this tool in an agile way and in short time. Its content has been built based on a text done by 92 specialists from the Cordoba hospital, with coordination from the Internal Medicine UGC, which will be also published as a book by Elsevier in both Spain and Latin America.
The expert group who has created this application have started a spin -off called PadMedicine SL, with which they hope to open new avenues of knowledge and work in order to improve health care and facilitate daily work of health professionals.
